Educational Feasibility Studies

Iron Compass has a long history of providing GIS (Geographic Information Systems) capabilities for school district feasibility studies. We work with architects and planners to provide insights into the current state, as well as future state of school districts.

Understanding the Current State

Iron Compass gathers data so districts can more fully understand current state. It’s always rewarding when a school board sees the location of students on a map and the crossing over of attendance boundaries for the first time.

Visualizing schools and students leads to better understanding of a distrtict.

We collect and map features such as:

  • School locations of both public and private
  • Current students geolocated on a map
  • Demographic and Socioeconomic data
  • Hazardous roads and bus routes

Gather Plans of the Community’s Future

There are many factors that may impact the attendance in a school district. Capturing those features is the first step to more fully understand the future.

We gather data on proposed residential developments as well as commercial and industrial developments which may impact residential development/student enrollment in a district.

Inventory of approved and proposed residential developments.

We gather demographic data to understand the future trends in enrollment. For instance, we have seen a district with an aging population, flip quickly to a younger population with kids, and increased the enrollment quickly.

Modeling the Future

The future is every changing, and “what if” models can be run with the data gathered to better understand the impact of different scenarios. Examples include, but not limited to:

  • Declining enrollment and closing schools
  • Increasing enrollment and adding schools
  • Reconfiguration of grades/schools
  • Impact of demographic changes in enrollent
  • Impact of new residential developments
  • Consolidation of school districts
